The Garden House is an oasis of peace and tranquillity, but if you want to tour the wonderful countryside for which Provence is so justly famous, here are a few highlights.
St. Remy Town Centre
With historic narrow streets, squares, attractive boutiques and art galleries, St Rémy is one of the most beautiful villages in the heart of Provence.
There are plenty of cafés to explore and a range of fantastic restaurants serving authentic country cooking based on local products. There are market days and many celebrations and festivals throughout the year to enjoy.
Avignon hosts a wide range of great restaurants and is one of the most starred cities in France for dining. Dating back to the Middle Ages, Avignon still retains a lot of its historic architecture – a lot of which is registered with UNESCO world heritage. Highlights include the Popes’ Palace and the Bridge of Avignon, museum of the Petit Palais and the Cathedral of Doms.
Arles is a town of Roman treasures and shady squares and famed for its connection to Vincent Van Gogh who painted around 200 canvases around the town.
It also boasts an amphitheatre, built around 90 AD to hold 20,000 spectators. Its design was inspired by the Roman Colosseum and much of the original architecture remains and is still used to host outdoor concerts and performances.
Ideal for day trips in the car or countryside walks, Les Alpilles is a small range of low mountains that boast some of the most beautiful settings in France.
The limestone mountains peak at 498 metres and offer a panoramas that stretch for miles. Along the route is the ancient Roman site of Glanum, Fontvieille (famous for Daudet’s windmill) and many other villages with authentic charm.
